Alex Diax, Ph.D., 68 Main Street, Suite 340, Tuckahoe, NY 10707. Alex Diaz, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Tuckahoe, NY. Dr. Diaz is a psychotherapist as well as a sports psychology consultant. He sees people ages 4 and up, including senior citizens. Dr. Diaz’s approach is to look at an individual from a family systems therapy perspective and to use the holistic approach of somatic psychotherapy. As he describes, somatic psychology includes the idea that the body holds experiences we have had in the past, and these experiences are nonverbal. How the body is holding that experience can become a habit over time. Allowing the body to feel, whether a fast heartbeat or a shaky hand for examples, without judgement, and to finish what it wants to is part of therapy, in addition to the verbal expression of talk therapy, and is part of the holistic approach. In his work with athletes, Dr. Diaz is able to teach them to be with their bodies and manage their emotions, so that they can mentally prepare themselves to regulate their emotions before a game. These skills are equally applicable to one’s whole life, and athletes learn new coping skills, including practicing mindfulness and breathing, that they can use for their life beyond sports. People come to see Dr. Diaz for psychotherapy for issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, and family conflicts. Athletes come to see him for issues with performance or with challenges in relationships with coaches. Dr. Diaz’s sessions are 45 minutes to 1 hour, usually once per week. For psychotherapy, sessions are in the office; for athletes, sessions are in the office, by Skype, or at the practice site. His office hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. He accepts ValueOptions insurance and UnitedHealthcare insurance. Dr. Diaz is a consultant for the athletics program at Concordia College in Bronxville, NY. He gives talks on sports psychology at colleges and universities, as well as at sports-related businesses.
