A psychiatric nurse practitioner can evaluate, conduct psychotherapy, and provide medication management. Ms. Levitan specializes in anxiety and mood disorders, using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT); specific disorders include panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), generalized anxiety disorder, and depression. A benefit to working with a psychiatric nurse practitioner is that both treatment modalities, medication management and psychotherapy, are in one place. After an initial 90 minute evaluation, sessions are 45 minutes and are typically once per week. Depending on one’s goals, over time, sessions might decrease in frequency. Ms. Levitan describes cognitive behavioral therapy as present-centered, goal-oriented, and skill-based; she similarly describes medication management as present-centered, targeted to symptom relief, and skill-based. Ms. Levitan emphasizes self-care skills, and this includes requiring one to get a physical exam and laboratory work from one’s internist as part of maintaing good physical health. Ms. Levitan works with adults ages 18 and over. Occasionally, she will provide the cognitive behavioral therapy piece for an adolescent, in concert with an adolescent psychiatrist’s management of medication.
